You hate to see your baby go through teething and you want to help!  Here is a homemade teething biscuit you can make to help sooth baby's aching gums.

Baby Teething Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baby cereal
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup flour (white
  • wheat
  • or mixed)
  • 1 4-ounce jar baby bananas or applesauce

Directions:

Preheat over to 325F.  Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and stir.  Roll the mixture out to about 1/2 inch thick between sheets of wax paper that's been lightly floured.  Use a roundcookie cutter or the top of a juice glass to cut the biscuits into round shapes.  Place biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet or one covered with parchment paper.  Bake until browned slightly and they are hard, this will take about one hour. 

Another option is to roll the dough into "logs" and again bake until they are hard.

Graham crackers are a great cracker to start babies off with because they soften easily and taste great.  You can make these at home as a cracker or even roll them into a log shape to be used as a baby teether.

Graham Crackers From Scratch

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour (graham or whole wheat)
  • 1 cup unbleached flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk

Directions:

Begin by mixing together the flours and the baking powder.  Add butter or margarine and mix until you get the consistency of cornmeal.  Blend in the sugar.  Then add the milk and this will help to make the dough stiff.  On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into squares and prick them with a fork.  Brush the tops of the crackers with milk.  Bake in the over at 400F on a baking sheet that is not greased for about 18 minutes or until you can see the crackers turn golden brown.  Alternatively you can roll these crackers thicker and use them as teething biscuits.

Fresh fruit is always a great, healthy snack for babies and toddlers.  Instead of just mashing up the fruit and offering it to baby, why not try making up one (or more) of these fruit snacks.

Easy Banana & Avocado Snack

1/2 overly ripe avocado, mashed or pureed
1/2 overly ripe banana, mashed or pureed
1/4 cup cottage cheese or yogurt

Mix everything together and serve!

Fruit & Cheese

1/2 cup of large-curd cottage cheese
4-6 tablespoons orange juice
1/2 cup fresh fruit, cooked or raw

Combine all ingredients and blend quickly.  Allow to cool and serve.

Mashed Banana

1/2 mashed banana
1/2 small mashed baked potato or yam

Mix both ingredients together well.  If it is a little sticky you can add in some formula, breast milk or water.

Homemade Gelatin with Fruit

1/4 cup warm water
1 envelope of unflavoured gelatin
1 cup pureed fruit

Pour envelope of unflavoured gelatin into warm water and mix until fully dissolved.  Add fruit and stir, allow to chill and serve.

Stews and soups are great for babies when they are made properly.  In the beginning you will make the pieces of food small and soft so they are easy for baby to swallow and then over time you can begin to introduce larger items and textures to the stew.

Baby Recipe For Chicken Rice Stew

  • 1 cup cooked cubed chicken or turkey
  • 1/4 cup cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup cooked vegetables
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup breast milk or formula

Directions:

Puree all ingredients together and then pour the mixture into ice cube trays to make food cubes.  If you don't want make food cubes or don't have enough ice cube trays you can make food plops by taking a spoonful of the pureed stew and placing it on a baking sheet and then placing that into the freezer immediately.  Once your portions are frozen take them out and place in a large resealable bag to use at a later date.  Don't forget to label and date the bag as well.

When your baby is teething there is no doubt you want to find something that will help sooth the pain as quickly and easily as possible.  There are many recipes for teethers that you can make at home.  Here is an easy no-egg recipe that you can use with ingredients you have on hand to make a teether for your baby.

  • 1 cup flour (white wheat or a combination)
  • 1 cup fruit juice

Directions:

Mix all ingredients well.  If you have enough time to chill dough in the fridge, do so.  Roll the dough out between sheets of lightly floured wax paper to a thickness of about 1/2 inch.  Using acookie cutter or the top of a juice glass cut the dough into round shapes.  Put biscuits onto lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 350 F for 40 minutes or until they are hard.

Your baby will love these oatmeal crackers and you'll be happy to know what is in them!  This is a healthy snack for baby at anytime of the day.

Oatmeal Crackers

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour (graham or whole wheat)
  • 1 cup unbleached flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine

Cinnamon, Spice & Everything Nice Applesauce

Ingredients:

  • 4 large or 6 medium apples peeled
  • 1.2 small lemon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions:

Cut the core out of the apples, chop the remaining apple up into small pieces.  Put the apple pieces into a medium pot. Take the lemon and squeeze the juice out of it and then pour juice over the apples.  Add remaining ingredients.  Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat.  When mixture has boiled, reduce heat to low and cover.  Allow to simmer, stirring often until apples are soft and mushy (about 20-30 minutes).  Remove apples from heat once they are soft and allow to cool for 15-20 minutes.  Once the apples have cooled but while they are still slightly warm,  mash them with a potato masher until they are the texture you want.  Serve applesauce warm or chilled depending on your preference.

Ingredients:

  • 6  ounces tomato paste  
  • 4  cups tomatoes chopped seeded peeled  
  • 1  medium onions chopped  
  • 1  green peppers medium and chopped  
  • 1  tablespoons salt  
  • 1  cups sugar  
  • 1/4  cup white vinegar

Directions:

1. Combine tomatoes, paste, onions, green peppers, salt and sugar in a large saucepan and heat to boiling.  2. Once it's boiled reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for about 1 1/2 hours, uncovered or until it has thickened slightly.  3. Stir in vinegar and heat.  4. Spoon hot ketchup into jars and leave about 1/4 inch of space at the top of the jar.  5. Let the jars sit for about 20 minutes in a boiling water bath.

  • 1 package cream cheese

Directions:

1. Lay out the arrowroot cookies and spread the cream cheese over them. 2. Put an apple slice on top of the cream on each cracker. 3. Add a cookie on top to make a sandwich. You can add different fruits on the cracker instead of apples, or mix fruits.  Also you could use applesauce or a puree of fruits or even vegetables.

Making fruit salad is a great way to give your children a healthy service of fruits in a fun snack.  Coconut makes a sweet addition to any salad, use dried coconut in this recipe along with plenty of fresh fruit and your kids will love it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp Hershey's Chocolate Sauce
  • 1/8 c Bits of Dried Coconut
  • 1/4 c Dried Apricots
  • 1/2 c Whipped Cream Topping

  • 1/4 c Bananas
  • 1/8 c Apples
  • sans-serif;">1/3 c Mini-Marshmallows

Directions:

1.  Dice up the apples and apricots into small pieces.  Cut the seedless grapes in half and mash the bananas.

2.  Melt the marshmallows by putting them in the microwave until almost completely melted then give them a stir, don't leave in the microwave too long.

3.  Mix all ingredients together, serve and enjoy!
